My Favourite Springtime Activities to Nourish the Soul
Join me in exploring the outdoors, planting to attract wildlife, becoming a tourist in my hometown, visiting festivals or markets, and capturing the beauty of spring through photography.
Whenever I’m asked which season is my favourite, I always find it so hard to answer, because there are so many beautiful things about each one. But I must admit, that as soon as the new year starts, I get very excited about spring. From the warmer weather, to the flowers blooming, and nature waking up after a long winter’s rest, to the longer days and shorter nights, I love them all.
What better way to enjoy spring than to enjoy doing some springtime activities! I thought I’d share five of my favourite ones that will hopefully inspire and encourage you too. They are fun, slow and simple things to do during the springtime, that will bring joy, nourishment and enjoyment.
Spending time outdoors
If you’re like me, then you probably spend most of your time inside during the winter, trying to keep as warm as possible. As soon as spring comes, I try to spend as much time outside as I can. Whether it’s going for a walk or just taking some time out during the day to enjoy all of the wonderful things spring has to offer, and breathing in that fresh spring air, it really helps me to feel so much more energised.
What’s even better, is now that the days are getting longer and the nights are getting shorter, it gives us more time to enjoy being outside, especially after a full-on day. I find it wonderful listening to the birds singing and smelling the freshly-bloomed flowers. Springtime is a beautiful time of year. Trees are sprouting leaves and are filled with blossom, and the fields are full of daffodils and tulips. Growing up and living in Lincolnshire, driving past all the fields was always one of my favourite springtime activities.
Planting something green and attracting wildlife
You may not be into gardening, and to be honest, it’s not really something that I have done much of over the years, but I am very passionate about all things green, and I believe that the world should be filled with even more of it. The best bit is that it is such a rewarding activity.
A few years back my mum and I enjoyed turning the garden in to wildlife garden, and also planting herbs, flowers and some vegetables. Over the years we have welcomed families of hedgehogs. It’s such a joy to welcome them each spring and to know that they have somewhere safe and sound to rest over winter. We were also pleasantly surprised to find a family of frogs who appeared quite some time back, and have stayed in the garden ever since.
Here in Lichfield, we have also embraced lots of green within our little garden. It’s amazing watching all of the wildlife come to visit. There are so many birds including goldfinches, long-tailed tits, blackbirds, starlings, lots of pigeons, and sweet little robins. We also get quite a few squirrels come, and I’m determined to attract some frogs here too!
We’ve added more bird feeders, along with a squirrel feeder box and also a squirrel picnic table, which has been a really fun addition!
Being a tourist in my hometown
It’s wonderful the things you can discover in your hometown, city or village. Until recently, I’ve lived in only two towns in the same area of Lincolnshire, and even now I’m still discovering new things and new places to go to when I go back and visit.
Just by going for a walk or a drive up the road, I’ve discovered lanes that take you to beautiful wooded areas, nature reserves, tiny museums and so much more. Things that I had no idea even existed near to where I live.
Even here in Lichfield, David and I are still discovering new places, and David’s been here for many years! There’s always something new to discover and beautiful places to go to and visit. I feel that it’s a really great way to focus on your surroundings and to be present in the moment. If you head on over to David’s Substack, you can find our latest discovery here in Lichfield!
I would love to know what amazing things you have discovered in your hometown and the area you live in?
Going to a festival or market
Whether it’s going to an arts festival, a music festival, a craft festival, or even a food festival or a farmers market, there are lots of different events to go to during the spring months. I love discovering new ones.
They are the perfect places to go and watch local bands play, support local artists and small businesses, and to try new foods. It’s a great way to kick off the season and to spend and enjoy some time outside.
Last year my hometown brought back its famous flower parade after it was stopped for several years. I think one my favourite things about it is how it unites everyone outdoors, surrounded by nature. It's heartwarming to witness countless smiles lighting up faces as everyone comes together to celebrate. I’m so excited to be going to it this year.
Taking spring-inspired photos
As someone who loves taking photos, I especially love taking photos in the spring. It’s a way of capturing nature’s beauty around us, the start of a new year, new life and new beginnings.
As birds and animals return from their migrations and hibernations, it's an ideal moment to capture them through photography. Among my springtime favourites are the blossoming trees and the various insects drawn to the beautiful flowers. Currently, I'm on a mission of capturing birds amidst the blooming blossoms!
What springtime activities and adventures bring you joy?
