As the last few remnants of winter fade away, spring has burst into full bloom, thriving and flourishing, bringing with it a vibrancy of awe-inspiring colour, detail and uniqueness.
One of my favourite outdoor places to visit throughout the year here in Lichfield, is St Michael’s churchyard. It’s one of the 5 largest churchyards in England, covering a 9 acre area, and adorned with more than 500 trees.
I love that they allow nature to reclaim and rewild itself. I wholeheartedly support the action of embracing rewilding in our local communities. The churchyard is particularly known for its natural beautiful displays of snowdrops, crocus, daffodils, bluebells, blossom trees, cow parsley, endless amounts of wild garlic, and more. There’s so much wildlife to discover too! It’s a peaceful haven for birdwatching and discovering all sorts of insects. Plus in the autumn there’s lots of fungi, which is always an added bonus!
The path leading towards the church itself, welcomes you with an enchanting walk which is lined with blossoming tress that warmly greet you on either side.
The wild garlic, when out in flower, produces a vast blanket of stunning white, and a delicate whiff of delicious garlic fills the air.
The bluebells create a mesmerising sight, painting the landscape with shades of violet, white and pink.
“It is always safe to dream of spring. For it is sure to come; and if it be not just as we have pictured it, it will be infinitely sweeter.”
